The best time to update your resume is before you need to submit it for a job or opportunity. If you stay ready, you won’t have to get ready!

When’s the last time you reviewed or updated your resume? Is your current position listed?

If you met someone and they said "Send me your resume." Are you prepared to do so?

Here are some tips to aid in updating your resume frequently.

1. Track your day to day achievements

Set a system to track your accomplishments. Your job may use a system that tracks what you do, if they don’t create your own system!

You can start by taking a look at your calendar each week to determine what to track. The events that happen most, are probably a good indication that it is something you should be tracking. For me as an academic advisor, I track my student appointments, professional development meetings and team meetings.

2. Set time on your calendar now!

Whether it's 1x a week, 1x a month, 1x every quarter, whatever you decide schedule it now!

Review each day/week of work and quantify what you’ve accomplished. How many strategic meetings have you had, attended any professional development, met any sales goals, conducted presentations, attended networking events, collaborated with team members? This list goes on. These are all note worthy accomplishments!

3. Add your accomplishments to your resume

Turn your weekly accomplishments into bullet points. Start with an action verb, showcase your results and quantify where you can!

Ex. Published targeted weekly newsletters containing recruiting updates and employment opportunities to more than 2,000 School of Business students

4. Have someone review your resume once you’ve made edits.

Another pair of eyes may see things that you may have missed!

5. Keep a copy of your updated resume handy (email, google drive etc.)

Stay ready so you never have to get ready!
